World at War is based on real events  but naturally adds its own Call of Duty spin  while Vanguard is largely a work of fiction. Funny enough, the two do share one point in common: A Russian sniper. Vanguard's Polina picks up her father's old rifle after he's killed by Nazis in the bombing of Stalingrad.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare takes place in a fictional country called Urzikstan, a mixture of Syria and Afghanistan, and includes the fictional group Al-Qatala. Yes, Al-Qatala. Aggregating real places and groups into fictional ones makes things easier creatively.

Designed by the American company Infinity Ward and produced by Activision, Call of Duty used World War II as a setting, allowing players to see the war through the eyes of American, Soviet, and British soldiers.
